Caring for people with severe disabilities

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps to prevent contractures and skin damage that can be caused by pressure and poor positioning. Encouraging movement can guard against secondary complications such as respiratory infections.

We have a well-equipped department, where residents can relax and learn that they can have control over their own health status.

Individual physiotherapy needs are assessed and a tailored programme of stretches, massage and exercise to meet individual needs is drawn up.

Physiotherapists work with residents to relieve pain and preserve and protect muscles and joints. Residents need to be able to move as freely as possible and to be able to sit and lie comfortably.

Most residents are wheelchair users and staff monitor equipment to make sure all the wheelchairs are safe to use and people are correctly positioned. The department hosts regular wheelchair clinics, which are provided by local NHS services.
