Our Therapy team have been working with Austin Kentebe, the Head Coach at Brixton Ballers, to create a sports programme for British Home’s residents. Our Head of Therapy, Elizabeth Muchechetere, wanted to give everybody the opportunity to try new sports, and in some cases, play a sport that they once played regularly.
Our therapy suite and recreational room were transformed, and the residents had the opportunity to play basketball, boccia and badminton, to name a few. Elizabeth spoke of the purpose and positive impacts sports can have, ‘these purposeful games are therapeutic, engaging and assist in improvements in; upper body strength, coordination, mental attitude, reduction in stress and depression’.
The Therapy team, alongside Austin, are creating individual sports programmes for our residents. ‘We want to assess short- and long-term benefits regular physical activity will have. We will base this on mobility and strength, but most importantly on overall happiness. The smiles in the room today have shown the benefits sport has on mental health, and that is something we want to help improve. Today has been a great success and I am looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming year’.
